Saddle Club

DERS Saddle Club

This program takes riders who have demonstrated consistent control at the walk and trot to the next level. Students will be concentrating on the practical skills and knowledge necessary for the rider to earn Level 2 certification through CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association). Riders entering this program who have not taken the Level 1 riding exam must receive permission from an instructor, either as an existing student, or after riding in an assessment lesson.

Students independently adjust their stirrups, and take part in group riding lessons weekly. After mastering steering and control at the trot, while maintaining proper riding position, students will turn their attention to the canter. The Saddle Club program focuses on transitions, and aims for students to attain safe control of their horse at the canter.*

Two times per year, students have the opportunity to participate in our CHA Level Testing Horse Show. This includes a written test and a riding test in front of a CHA-certified judge. The written exam must be passed with a score of 80. Students attaining a riding score over 90 may move into Bridle Club.

*Because safety is our priority, the lesson objectives of the riding program are wholly dependent upon the demonstrated progress of the students; advancement through these objectives is at the discretion of the instructor.

Saddle Club is open to riders who have passed Halter Club, who have a CHA Level 1 Certificate, OR who completed a Private Rider Assessment demonstrating required skills. To test out of Saddle Club, riders must have successfully completed the CHA Level 2 written and riding tests, having learned the canter and have been introduced to cross-rails and ground poles. At this point, the rider is ready to join Bridle Club.
